You can make these from scratch or use your favorite flavor cake box mix!
For cake box mixes just follow the directions on the box and bake then cool. Then follow the rest of the directions listed below.
From scratch...
• 1 4oz pkg German sweet chocolate
• 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 1/2 cup butter
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 tsp vanilla
• 3 egg yolks
• 2/3 cup buttermilk
• 3 stiff-beaten egg whites
Grease & lightly flour two 8" round baking pans.
Heat Chocolate & 1/3 cup water till chocolate melts; cool. Combine flour, soda & 1/2 tsp salt. Beat butter about 30 seconds. Add sugar & vanilla; beat till fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating 1 minute after each yolk. Beat in chocolate mixture.
Add dry ingredients & buttermilk alternately to beaten mixture, beating after each addition. Fold in egg whites. Turn into pans.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes. Cool 10 minutes. Remove from pans to cool.
Once completely cool, crumble cakes into large mixing bowl. Add 1/2 jar of pre-made frosting. Take a 1" cookie dough scoop and scoop onto waxed paper lined cookie sheets. Pop into freezer. This will make it easier for dipping.
Melt chocolate and white chocolate, dip each cake ball into melted chocolate and place back onto cookie sheet. Sprinkle with any holiday sprinkles & pop back into freezer.
